Choose Iowa program

I think that the CHOOSE Iowa program is excellent...although the story in this weeks Farm News didn't give any information on where to go to find a list of items in the CHOOSE Iowa program right now. I would much rather buy things that are made right here in the heartland, by people I know and trust than by countries over seas who have limited rules and restrictions. Who know's what we are getting?? One thing is for sure, I know what I am getting when I buy foods that are grown right here in Iowa!!

kristi06--Don't be deluded into thinking you know what you are getting when you buy American made. Yes, we do have more regulatory agencies, but they can not possibly oversee the multitude of businesses here. As long as companies do not have violations, the regulatory agencies do not constantly have an active presence. As a former drug company employee, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that the general public is not aware of. Don't get me wrong, this is not to say that things are done maliciously to harm consumers. Just want to bring to your attention that what you see isn't always what you get. Take the recent salmonella incident for example and the several instances of E-coli contamination of fresh vegetables in the last few years. That said, I do agree that in general American Made products are better quality than the over seas options. But sometimes one has to settle for a little lower quality to save dollars and make ends meet.

Chantal-- Although I agree that at these times choosing to spend more money on American made products is a tough decision, it is a decision that must be made. In recent years, the United States has lost large companies who are moving production overseas in the hopes of saving money, and they are !!! Maytag, Electrolux, and car companies such as Ford, have all been great losses, among others. It seems that if we do not make the decision to spend a little more in the store now, we may be paying the ultimate price in the future. Not to mention we can be more certain of the means and procedures used to collect American made products, whereas we can not ever be sure what we are getting from other countries.

Although maybe we should point out the people who are at real fault for putting us in this situation to begin with---the government. They have made it too easy for big companies to go overseas---and leave Americans without jobs, which is only adding to our economic difficultie

I'm all for buying local and supporting Iowa business, but in these tough economic times, products from over seas are often times more affordable. I know, I know, preserve America's jobs. However, America needs to find ways to cut costs to make products more affordable and a more attractive choice. Some people will buy a product simply because it is made in the USA even if the made in the USA products is considerably more expensive. Hooray for those that can afford to buy American made products. For those financially challenged people, like myself, regrettably I will continue to buy the least costly product, regardless of where it was grown or made.
