What's with the hysteria of getting the H1N1 flu shot?
If you don’t want to get it. Don’t. But consider these two factors before you make this decision.
- No one is immune to this novel, H1N1 virus. Most of the respiratory illnesses we get are mild cases and not influenza at all. If you’ve ever gotten the real deal, it hits so hard, so fast, you’ll never be confused by it again. It is nasty and it puts people in the hospital. Of the 1,000 H1N1 deaths so far this year, 76 have been children. That’s a lot. Be careful of the consequences for those who are entrusted in your care as you roll the dice.
- Even if you are in the tip-top of health and feel confident that if you get this crud you can fight it off, keep in mind you can infect others, especially those who have their immune systems scrambled by chemo therapy, and others with medical conditions that prevent them from getting a shot. They depend on being in a society that is up-to-date on its immunizations.
- So, in the words of Dr. Laura Schlessinger, “Now go do the right thing.”
